The Tradition of the Dominican Fair

The history of St. Dominic's Fair dates back to the Middle Ages, when in 1260 the Dominicans of Gdańsk received permission from the Pope to organize indulgence masses on the occasion of the feast of their founder. After the celebrations in the church on St. Dominic's Square, there was always a market of goods from different parts of the world, which was also accompanied by various events and entertainment such as theater or circus shows. Over time, so many traders gathered that the fair expanded to other squares - and so the Fish, Sienny, Coal and Wood Markets were created, and their names came from the products sold there. From its beginning, St. Dominic's Fair was held every year. Only the outbreak of World War II interrupted this tradition, which was not resumed until 1972. Therefore, the current edition is already the 764th Dominican fair.

Events and attractions during the St. Dominic's Fair 2024

Every year, during the fair, Gdańsk becomes the center of Europe. In addition to the typical shopping and gastronomic part, the organizers of the St. Dominic's Fair have prepared a rich festival program for visitors. It is inextricably linked to the fair stops divided into thematic zones. These special places create space for rest, activity and fun. This year, there are five stops: Retro, Adventure, Equality, Port Gdański and Przystanek Smaków. Each of them is distinguished by other attractions aimed at different types of recipients, e.g. families with children, seniors, jazz music lovers, film lovers or collectors of antiques. The fair program also includes the International St. Dominic's Run, the Grand Prix Dobre Jadło gastronomic competition and the Fair's Talent Forge competition, as well as numerous concerts, shows, exhibitions and street parades. Permanent points, which attract many visitors, are also the ceremonial opening and closing ceremonies of the fair.
