The Gdańsk Christmas market is the leading holiday event in Pomerania, but also throughout Europe. In 2023, Gdańsk won second place in the Best Christmas Markets competition organized by the Europe's Best Destinations portal. Of course, Jacek Placek's stand with our delicious baked goods cannot be missing at this unique fair! We invite you to visit us from November 24 to December 23.
The history of the Christmas market
The first Christmas fairs in Gdańsk were organized already in the 17th century. At that time, they were located next to the historic parish church of the Main Town (currently St. Mary's Basilica) and had a typical market character. Local merchants sold their goods, and local residents could stock up on necessary products for the holidays. In the 19th century, the fairs were moved to the Artus Court and were called Christmas Dominics. At that time, local craftsmen were already exhibiting their products. After World War I, fairs began to take on a more modern style, i.e. they became several-day events of a social, culinary, entertainment and increasingly commercial nature.
However, the tradition of Christmas markets itself was born in the 14th century in German-speaking countries, and from there it began to spread to other countries and cities in Europe, now becoming a global event.
Unique attractions at the fair in Gdańsk
Although we associate fairs mainly with a typical commercial event, Christmas markets also offer a number of various attractions and entertainment for visitors. The organizers of the fair in Gdańsk have also prepared a very rich program, dedicated to both children and adults.
What interesting things will happen to us in Gdańsk this year? Every day, visitors have the opportunity to participate in events planned for that day. The program included, among others: concerts of various artists, Christmas karaoke, dance parties, performances and animations for children or opening the windows of the Advent calendar. The entire fair area has been divided into several corners where individual meetings and attractions are planned. A very interesting place is the armory of arts and crafts, an artistic corner where you can take part in workshops and make beautiful decorations and Christmas decorations yourself. There is also an entertainment zone in the corner of Christmas travels - especially loved by children. There, visitors can enjoy a carousel, Santa's interactive sleigh and a rollercoaster in the form of spinning barrels (new this year). Of course, at the Christmas market you can't miss Santa Claus himself on his luminous throne, where you must take a souvenir photo.
Moreover, from December 5, the fair streets will glow with beautiful illuminations and turn the historic center of Gdańsk into a Christmas town. And in the angel's corner, wonderful angel wings have been prepared for walkers, where you can stand next to and take a photo of yourself or your loved ones.
