This is true, but this dish came to our country from Asia, most likely from China. There, since ancient times, people have eaten jiaozi or baozi, i.e. dumplings in a form similar to the modern version we know. Then, thanks to merchants and travelers traveling the Silk Road, dumplings reached Europe.

However, in Poland, as the legend goes, this dish appeared only around the 13th century thanks to the Dominican bishop, Saint Jacek Odrowąż, who tasted pierogi during his expedition to Kievan Rus and then popularized them in Poland. During the famine that followed, Saint Jacek even prepared them himself and distributed them to the poor.

Pierogi in Polish culinary culture

In our country, pierogi are among the most popular dishes, which are also eagerly eaten by foreign guests. We know them in various flavors - which depends on the region, tradition and available ingredients. The most classic versions are => Russian dumplings, dumplings with meat and dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms, which are particularly associated with Christmas.

An inseparable element of Polish culinary culture are also sweet pierogi: with cheese, fruit or poppy seeds. Every Polish family has its favorite recipes and methods of preparing dough, and the art of making pierogi is often passed down from generation to generation.

It is also worth noting that initially in Poland pierogi were considered a holiday dish and were served only on special occasions, such as weddings, harvest festivals or religious celebrations. Housewives prepared them in various shapes and fillings. What's more, depending on the holiday celebrated, pierogi were distinguished by their own names, such as kurniki for a wedding, koladki for New Year's Day or sanieżki and socznie for name days. Over time, however, pierogi began to appear on Polish tables as part of everyday meals, although the tradition of serving this dish on Christmas Eve, i.e. during the holiday season, has survived to this day.

Pierogi in many ways

Thanks to their huge variety of fillings and ways of serving, pierogi can satisfy the tastes of even the most demanding gourmets. For example, Russian and meat pierogi go perfectly with fried onion. On the other hand, with spinach they taste great with a delicate cream sauce.
